The Hidden Hair & Skin Struggles of Menopause + LA Hard Water

Double Trouble: Menopause + LA Hard Water = Hair & Skin Woes (and What Helped Me)
Let's talk about something many of us don't realize is sabotaging our hair and skin: hormonal shifts and hard water. On their own, they're frustrating. But together? It's a brutal double whammy—especially here in LA, and especially if you're navigating menopause or post-menopause.
I've spent 30 years in skincare and wellness, and I've learned to stay deeply attuned to my body's rhythms. I thought I had a good handle on how hormonal changes affect the skin—and in many ways, I do. But where did I miss the mark?
Hair health. It snuck up on me, and it took some digging (and some trial and error) to connect the dots.
Menopause & Post-Menopause: What Happens to Our Hair
Once estrogen begins to drop (hi perimenopause, hello post-menopause), so does our hair's natural thickness, moisture, and bounce. You might notice:
- More hair in the drain or your brush
- A widening part or a thinning crown
- Dry and more brittle texture
- Less volume, slower growth
- A scalp that suddenly feels tight or flaky
This is primarily due to lower estrogen levels and relatively higher androgens, which cause hair follicles to shrink. And don't even get me started on how dry everything gets — skin included.
The LA Hard Water Factor (It's Real)
Now add our hard Los Angeles water, rich in calcium and magnesium. What does that mean for your hair?
- A filmy mineral buildup that weighs down strands
- More frizz, dullness, and dryness
- Scalp irritation and blocked follicles
- Did I say dry, brittle, and frizzy?
And it's not just your hair — skin suffers too. I noticed more dryness, itchiness, and flakiness, especially on my legs and arms. It was like nothing I applied could sink in.
Enter: Jolie Showerhead — My Shower Savior
I honestly wish I had found the Jolie Showerhead sooner. It's a simple switch that made a huge difference in both my hair and skin. Jolie filters out chlorine, heavy metals, and those hard water minerals that wreak havoc on our delicate, shiftingskin/hair during hormonal changes.
What changed for me after installing it?
- My hair feels softer. It dries with less frizz, and the products actually work again.
- No more random itching or dryness.
- My skin feels smoother, absorbing moisturizers much better.
- Showering has become something I actually looked forward to again.
Honestly, I wish my gym had a Jolie. The difference in how my hair and skin feel after a shower following a workout is night and day. (Are you listening, gym gods?)
Check out the Jolie's beautiful showerhead design and colors! Super easy to install and maintain.
HERE is a great blog post on another great find for hair health- Heart and Soil Skin, Hair Nails.
You're welcome!
