Sleep Is Part of My Beauty Routine Now

Sleep Is Part of My Beauty Routine Now

Somewhere Along the Way, Eight Hours Became More Luxurious to Me Than Another Serum

There was a time when I could sleep five hours, drink coffee, put on concealer and carry on as though nothing happened.
Those days have left the building.
I miss them, but they’re gone.
Now?
My face keeps records.
Late night?
Recorded.
Wine?
Recorded.
Stress?
Poor diet?
Definitely recorded.
Poor sleep?
Apparently submitted in triplicate.
And although I will happily talk skincare with you all day, the older I get, the more interested my body and essence leans towards things affecting beauty that don’t come in bottles.
Sleep is very high on that list. It’s potentially, numero uno.

Beauty Really Is an Inside Job

When I talk about inside-out beauty at KismetK, I don’t mean abandoning skincare.
I LOOOOVE skincare, lotions and potions.
Clearly.
But our skin exists, begins inside a body.
And that body is affected by sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, hormones, thoughts, environment and everything else happening in our lives.
Sleep supports an enormous number of physiological processes.
And anyone who has experienced several terrible nights in a row doesn’t need a clinical trial to tell them they don’t look or feel their best.
Our eyes look tired.
More wrinkly? Is that a word?
Skin can look dull and lifeless.
We feel puffy.
Cravings change.
Patience disappears.
Suddenly we’re arguing with an inanimate printer.
We become a hot mess.

I’ve Started Treating Nighttime Differently.

It's as essential as water.

I used to think of bedtime as the moment the day finally ended.
Now I’m trying to think of the hour or two before bed as part of tomorrow.
That mental shift has been surprisingly helpful.
Instead of squeezing every possible task into the night, I’m experimenting with making evenings quieter.
Dimmer lights.
Less phone.
Softer music.
A warm shower.
Body care.
Skincare with gentle hands.
Something to read.
Various thoughts on paper.
A bedroom that feels truly home.
Nothing revolutionary.
That’s actually the point.

My Nighttime Beauty Ritual

I cleanse my face properly.
Always. Twice.
Then I apply whatever treatment makes sense that night rather than mindlessly layering everything I own.
I go with, and feel the skincare routine feels. It’s all energy.
On active nights that may include retinol.
On recovery nights, something yummy and nourishing.
I moisturize.
I apply body lotion or oil.
And I try to make the ritual itself part of the transition.
There’s something psychological about washing the day off.
It’s deeply personal, ever evolving, and uniquely formulated each night.

Make Your Bedroom Somewhere You Want to Sleep

We spend an extraordinary portion of our lives in our bedrooms, yet they’re often the last wellness environment we consider.
Cool.
Dark.
Quiet.
Comfortable.
Softness.
I want my bedroom to tell my nervous system:
We’re done for today.
I’m also fascinated by wellness tools designed around relaxation and evening routines. KismetK has explored products such as the MindLax Sleeping Mat, and My Sensate.
A silk eye mask.
Good bedding.
A book.
A small bedside ritual.
None of these needs to be expensive.
The luxury is creating the demand for sleep.
For self.

Stop Trying to Win the Day at Midnight

This one is mostly directed at myself.
There will always be another email.
Another thing to research.
Another load of laundry.
Another idea.
Another episode.
Another scroll.
At some point, continuing isn’t productive.
It’s borrowing from tomorrow.
And as I think more seriously about longevity, healthy aging and how I want to feel in my 50s and beyond, recovery has become just as interesting to me as effort.
We can’t constantly stimulate ourselves and call it wellness.
It’s not fair to our vessel.

The Best Beauty Routine Is Bigger Than Beauty

There is no serum I would give up sleep to apply.
That sentence would have surprised younger me.
But beauty, skin health looks different to me now.
It’s healthy skin, yes.
But it’s also energy.
Clear eyes.
Strength.
Curiosity.
Good posture.
A regulated nervous system.
Laughing.
Being interested in life.
Having enough energy to actually enjoy the body we’re spending so much money trying to preserve.
So I’m keeping my serums.
I’m keeping my devices.
I’m keeping my ridiculously specific opinions about cleansers.
But I’m also going to bed. Early.
Because sleep has officially made it into my beauty routine.
And unlike most luxury treatments, this one happens every night.
It’s as essential as water.
Tons of love. K
